About Us

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Capital Area Recreation Association. The generosity of citizens, local businesses, and area contractors has made it possible for CARA to grow from one Little League field and one Farm League field into a large outdoor recreation area.

CARA is utilized by the Augusta Little League, Capital Area Youth Softball Association, the Augusta National Guard Babe Ruth League, the Capital Area Soccer Club, the Kennebec Valley Horseshoe Pitchers Association, Kennebec Youth Lacrosse, St. Michael’s School, Cony Middle and High Schools, among others.

The CARA complex is a private non-profit organization and very unique. The area developed for outdoor recreational activities is nearly one mile long and includes playing areas for baseball, softball, horseshoes, football, soccer, field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and cross-country for youths and adults alike.

The CARA complex is used for other purposes such as walking, jogging, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and others by local residents, State of Maine employees, and workers from adjacent businesses from dawn to dusk daily.

Because of the broad-based level of commitment to the complex for almost four decades, there is a significant sense of ownership by area residents and businesses who have so generously contributed through donations and other resources plus the many non-paid volunteer hours that have been necessary to develop and maintain the complex. Our many selfless volunteers give the CARA complex a sense of community and pride.

CARA is a busy place, completely supported by the extraordinary efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of local businesses. Drop by sometime. We’d love to see you!
