CARA Golf Tournament
Date: 09/11/22
The annual CARA Golf Tournament is CARA’s major fundraising event. Proceeds are used to make capital improvements to the CARA Complex.
In 1995 a small group of CARA members initiated a golf tournament that would serve as a social event for the many dedicated volunteers that were involved in the development of the CARA complex. A secondary objective was to raise funds to be used for capital improvements at the complex.
Natanis Golf Course was chosen as the site of the first tournament and 40 golfers participated with the tournament being conducted on 9 holes of the 36-hole Natanis complex. A bag lunch was provided to each participant and CARA logo golf balls were given to each golfer. The first nine was played from the white tees at Arrowhead and the second round from the blue tees which were far distant from the white tees. After the tournament was concluded, prizes were awarded, and an auction was held.
The second year allowed more time for planning and the field was expanded considerably. This event was played on the Tomahawk Course and was highlighted by a hole-in-one on Tomahawk #2. The winner received a set of Titleist Irons. More golfers participated and the funds from the tournament grew.
One of the originators of the golf tournament and a longtime CARA member was Bob Burns who devoted a considerable amount of his time to expanding and improving this event. Bob loved to fund raise and was not the least bit bashful about solicitation. Recognizing Bob’s devotion to this event, the CARA golf committee named the annual golf tournament the Bob Burns Cara Open – a fitting tribute and fortunately this was done while Bob was still with us. Bob passed in 2004 but is fondly remembered.
The Bob Burns Cara Open continues to serve its original purpose as a social gathering for Cara members and supporters but has also become one of CARA’s principal fundraisers. Since its beginnings, the tournament has raised over $150,000.00 in net revenues which are dedicated to capital improvements. No member of Cara’s golf committee receives any remuneration for their services in line with any other Cara member.
