The Capitol Area Recreation Association (CARA) is a volunteer sports complex that covers nearly eighty acres and is maintained and operated by a small group of dedicated volunteers with support from locally committed businesses. A portion of our funding for equipment, capital improvements, maintenance, and youth registration scholarships is raised through the support of local businesses and food concessions. The balance is raised through an annual charity golf tournament and a “Sports Fields for Kids” Live Auction. In June of 2019, we held our first live annual auction and raised over $30,000.00. In 2020, due to COVID-19 and the hardship placed on area businesses, we decided to take a one-year hiatus to help allow our generous businesses to recover from the difficult times.
Our mission is simple, and our existence is unique. Simple because our goal is to provide safe green space for our area youth so they may develop lifelong skills and good character. Unique because we are not city-owned and operated but work hand and hand with the city of Augusta to provide a premier complex for our area youth.
From its start in 1974, the CARA complex began with one Little League field. Today the CARA complex is home to two Little League fields, one T-Ball Little League field, two regulation-size Babe Ruth fields, two Softball fields, one Softball T-Ball field, two outdoor basketball courts, a professional horseshoe pitching complex, and four regulation-size soccer/lacrosse fields. We estimate that close to seventy-five thousand young people, their parents, and grandparents along with enthusiastic sports fans, visit our complex on an annual basis.
